About

I'm a formally trained theoretical physicist who left the Academy for industry in 2013. I got my PhD at Texas A&M studying supergravity, string phenomenology and early universe cosmology. Subsquently I've worked to build machine learning based recommendation systems and their associated archticture for data at all scales.

Sean Downes

I have an inordinate amount of experience tangling with distributed computing and machine learning platforms, including Hadoop and Spark, and the associated programming with Python, Scala and to some extent Java. I'm always on the lookout for short term technical projects, and have consulted with a number of startups and nonprofits. Have some technical work to do? Let's collaborate!

I've also been known to tackle assorted website design and media production projects with Adobe Creative Cloud. One thing that's really starting to interest me is the application of representation theory to deep learning.

Presently my efforts are split between creating educational content and building businesses to support that endeavor. Beyond mathematics, I'm deeply engaged with mountain and endurance sports with my community on the eastern slopes of the North Cascade nountain range.

The Pasayten Insitute

The Pasayten Institute exists to pursue rigorous scientific inquiry and broaden the spectrum of Science education. I believe that serious research and education can and should happen everywhere, and that the public's support for and perception of the business of Science depends strongly on improved technical understanding.

My long-term vision is to develop the Institute into a small research center in the North Cascades, creating space for collaborative work in mathematical physics, science education, policy and the philosophy of scientific practice. This work happens at the boundary between abstract theory and embodied experience in the natural world.

The Institute is named after the river and wilderness that extends between the crest of the Cascades and the Okanagan river valley.
